Hassan slowly made his way inside Ming’s hospital room. Several hours had quickly elapsed since she’d been rushed into the ER, and she was finally stabilized and able to receive visitors.
“How you feelin’ babe?” Hassan asked. He took a seat in the visitor’s chair beside her bed. Ming looked a little pale and tired, but after having a bullet removed from her stomach that much was expected.
“The doctors said I’ll make a full recovery,” she answered wearily. Her meds were kicking in and it would only be a matter of time before she dozed off.
“That’s good.” Hassan nodded his head and smiled confidently. “I knew you would anyway,” he lied. “Look, I gotta talk to you about some serious shit…” Hassan paused. His face took on a serious expression. “I have to leave Spain…”
Ming frowned in disappointment. She wasn’t necessarily surprised to hear him say that. She just hoped it would be later than sooner.
Hassan waited for Ming to respond, but when she didn’t he decided to continue. “I can’t be puttin’ ya life in jeopardy with my bullshit,” he told her. “I should have never got you involved in the first place.”
“I wanted to be involved. You didn’t force me—“
“See, that’s the shit I’m talkin’ ‘bout,” Hassan cut her off. “Ming, you ain’t about the life I’m with…and real talk you too good for a nigga. You deserve better than me. You ain’t even got no business bein’ with a mothafucka like me, and I ain’t got no business bein’ here in Spain.” He swallowed the lump in his throat. Hassan hated that it had to come to this. “I need to go back home.”
“To Saudi Arabia?” Ming asked confused.
Hassan chuckled and shook his head in amusement. “No, Ming. To the US. To Ohio.”
Ming looked saddened by the news. Just when she and Hassan were finally starting to make real progress in their relationship he planned on leaving her.
“Look, I’ma leave some money for you in—“
“I don’t want your damn money,” Ming interrupted him. “I want you…”
There was a brief silence between the two. Hayden cooed and made little noises in his car seat. He was completely unaware of the tension inside the small hospital room.
Hassan was the first to break the silence when he said, “What you want may not always be what you need......I'm really starting to learn that shit.”
